our ethical advertising policy
Just as healthmatters has a principled editorial policy, it also applies an ethical policy which limits the kinds of advertising we will accept
Our advertising policy is based on the ethical policy of the Co-operative Bank.
Human rights and armaments
We will not accept advertising from:
- any regime or organisation which oppresses the human spirit or takes away the rights of the individual
- manufacturers of any equipment which is used in the violation of human rights
- any business involved in the manufacture, sale or brokerage of armaments to any country which has an oppressive regime
Ecological impact
We will not accept advertising from any organisation that as a core activity relies on:
- the extraction or production of fossil fuels
- the manufacture of chemicals that may contribute to problems such as ozone depletion, or which may accumulate in nature
- the unsustainable harvest of natural resources such as timber clearance, which leads to deforestation
Trade and social involvement
We will support and encourage advertising from:
- organisations which promote the concept of Fair Trade
- organisations participating in the social economy
Animal welfare
We will not accept advertising from organisations involved in any of the following:
- animal testing of cosmetic and household products or their ingredients
- exploitative factory farming methods
- blood sports, which involve the use of animals or birds to catch, fight or kill each other
- fur farming and the trade in animal fur
Harm to or commercial exploitation of health
We will not accept advertising from:
- tobacco manufacturers
- pharmaceutical manufacturers
- companies persistently breaching WHO marketing codes
- for-profit health care companies
