Behind bars...

Behind bars - maternity campaigners have drawn attention to the ‘barbaric practice’ of keeping pregnant women prisoners handcuffed during antenatal clinic visits and even, in some cases, during childbirth. Sheila Kitzinger, Caroline Flint, Ann Oakley and others are calling for the practice to be ended immediately, saying that it is ‘likely to have a profound effect on women’s self-esteem and mothering abilities’.
