Move from principles to practice

SELF-ADVOCACY IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES: the politics of resilience
Dan Goodley
Open University Press, 2000, £18.99

The caring professions increasingly recognise the value of self-advocacy, and this book could answer many people’s needs. As an academic text it works well. It is fully referenced and indexed, and systematically addresses key issues. As a reference book for academic work on the topic of self-advocacy and/or learning difficulties, it covers a great deal of ground.

On the other hand, if you are a clinician looking for a book to inform and support practice, you may find it lacking on one or two points.

In the interests of marrying theory and practice, I would have welcomed some guidance about organisations that support or explore the issues raised in the text. There are many such groups, and a discussion of their contributions would have added depth to the book.
