Sensitive, honest and compelling

Pure Madness: how fear drives the mental health system
Jeremy Laurance
Routledge, 2003

I was gripped by the findings, ideas and opinions expressed in this well-researched and well-written book. It delves headfirst into the mental health system, and allows many different voices to speak.

By hearing the views of those at the sharp end – nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, independent mental health agencies and service users – Jeremy Laurance succeeds in exposing the conflict between policy makers, health professionals and people who are mentally ill. And in revealing the role of the media and the effect mental illness has on society, he tackles complicated issues sensitively and honestly.

The blood, sweat and tears that went into producing the book are evident. The author’s personal encounters, observing mental health professionals in action, and the stories of staff and service users, allow the reader to empathise with the people involved and the issues they face. In sum, a compelling and intellectually stimulating book, full of passion and insight.
