Letter from America

I was pleased to read Steve Iliffe’s informative article on the subject of foundation hospitals and the covert efforts of the Labour Party to privatise the NHS (Diversity, inequality, inefficiency, issue 51). It appears to me that ‘New Labour’ has become a more palatable version of Thatcherism, presented in the mod style.

Although I’ve noted that that The Lancet is increasingly stressing public health and humanist principles in its editorials, and expressing a sophisticated understanding of the social and economic origins of illness and death, healthmatters remains for me the most reader-friendly periodical dealing with ‘health matters’ with its progressive approach to these subjects for both consumers and clincians.
