A gender for change

This Side of Doctoring: reflections from women in medicine
Eliza Lo Chin (editor)
Sage Publications, 2002. £23.00

This collection of stories, quotes and poetry encapsulates the experiences of women physicians in the USA. Beginning with the historical emergence of women in medicine, the stories and poetry progress to the present day. The shared experiences of these physicians, mothers, daughters, wives and friends portray women triumphing over trials and tribulations, surviving medical school and pursuing lengthy careers in a male-dominated profession, while maintaining personal relationships. What they reveal is the astonishing resourcefulness that is required of a woman physician.

By turns heartwarming, tear jerking and, in some instances, shocking, these accounts prove the strength of women who choose to tend to the medical needs of others.
