Social Exclusion Unit

www.socialexclusionunit.gov.uk A big collection of very meaty documents. The work of the SEU is project based, so they don’t seem to have ongoing responsibility for anything, but their work is surprisingly radical and far ranging – especially if you had written off the government’s radicalism as mere spin.

Socialist Health Association

www.sochealth.co.uk/poverty.htm The Socialist Health Association has a collection of materials of which I am quite proud. They range from the Poor Law of 1601, via the Black Report of 1980, to the latest Department of Health publications. We also attempt to cover Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Census 2001

www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/ default.asp The detailed results of the UK census are now available. There are serious questions about the completeness of the coverage, particularly in the most deprived areas, but there isn’t anything better or more comprehensive.

Neighbourhood Renewal Unit

www.neighbourhood.gov.uk Part of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Here you can find the official index of deprivation and links to a wide range of projects and evidence. Well designed and useful site.
