Responding to The King’s Fund report Thinking Differently About Commissioning, Nick Ville, Director of Membership and Policy at the NHS Confederation, which represents organisations across the healthcare sector, said:

“This report is welcome recognition of the increasing importance of collaboration, what this means for clinical commissioning and the growing need for Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) to work closely with local authorities.

“The case studies set out in the report are a useful illustration of how commissioning needs to develop within ICSs, with evidence that collaborative arrangements work best when CCGs and systems are approximately co-terminous with local authorities.

“The ICS Network, which has recently been launched by the NHS Confederation, has called for there to be flexibility on the notion of ‘place’ to allow local authorities to play a key role in future partnership working, regardless of their size and footprint.”
